Oshun is a powerful and venerated African Orisha (deity) in the Yoruba religion, revered as the goddess of love, beauty, sensuality, fertility, and water, particularly rivers and fresh waters. She is known for her kindness and beauty, often adorned with gold jewelry and mirrors, but also possesses immense power, including the ability to bring life-giving rain and destructive floods. Oshun is a crucial figure for women and is worshipped throughout West Africa and the African diaspora for her blessings of wealth, health, and children.  Oshun and the peacock are symbolically linked through various myths, primarily in the Yoruba religion and its diaspora, where peacocks represent Oshun's beauty, transformation, and self-determination. In one well-known tale, Oshun transformed into a peacock to fly to the Creator, Olodumare, to ask for rain during a devastating drought, sacrificing her beautiful feathers in the process and becoming a vulture, which also symbolizes her determination and transformation. The peacock also represents the abundance and sweetness she brings to the world.
